Breitling watch: R250 000

February 19th, 2010 by lindasly

Source: Independent Online (Original Article)

By Angelique Serrao

You do the maths …

Two houses: R4,6m

Cars: R1,2m plus

Breitling watch: R250 000

Monthly salary: R20 000

Julius Malema, the ANC Youth League president, owns two multimillion-rand homes - both of which he bought for cash.

This disclosure, which adds to questions surrounding how the youth league president affords his lavish lifestyle, comes just a day after Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that targeted lifestyle audits would be conducted this year.

The Star has discovered that Malema bought his three-bedroom home in Sandown for R3,6-million in December last year.

And, according to the Deeds Office, he owns two houses. The other is a mansion he bought in Polokwane in 2007 for R1m.
Continues Below ↓

The house in Sandown is in Silvela Road and the Deeds Office indicates that he bought it for R36m. But according to the previous owner, the house was sold for R3,6m.

The Sandown house has been described as luxurious, with three bedrooms, an office, a TV room, a lounge, a pool and a large garden.

It is the same house in which Malema held a controversial house-warming party in September last year.

A police reservist said at the time that he was assaulted by the youth league leader. Neighbours complained about the noise and mess that Malema’s party had caused. It was a sophisticated bash. YFM DJ Oskido provided the music, and guests were treated to R700-a-bottle Johnnie Walker Gold Label whisky and Moët et Chandon French Champagne.

When asked how he could afford to buy a R3.6m house cash, Malema reacted angrily.

“You and your husband and your family - that’s who you need to write about. You go away, just go away,” he said before slamming down the phone.

LONG ARM OF FEV

Brendan Fevola wants to be a policeman when he grows up. The new Brisbane full-forward - who infamously disgraced himself on Brownlow night when at Carlton - told grade six students at Cooroy State School on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast of a long-time desire to work in the police force. Attending the primary school as part of the Lions community camp, Fevola, 29, was king of the kids in a question-and-answer session with Brisbane teammates Josh Drummond, Sam Sheldon and Callum Bartlett. The full-forward announced he would officially begin his second football career on February 14 when he lines up for his new club against the Western Bulldogs in the opening round of the NAB Cup in Canberra. Once his playing days end, Fevola will consider finishing a university course he started three years ago. ”Three years ago, I actually studied for three months at Griffith University, here in Queensland, to be a policeman,” he told students. Asked later if he wanted to finish the course and enter the force, he said: ”I actually do want to be a policeman.” But Fevola, who also revealed maths was one of his favourite subjects at school, would rather be in forensics like ”Grissom from CSI” than walking a beat. ”I just don’t want to do the patrol stuff … but unfortunately you have to.” His alcohol-fuelled antics at last year’s Brownlow Medal ceremony led to an end to his 11 seasons at the Blues, allowing the Lions to swoop at trade week.

Fundamental Differences between Energy Storage and Other Sectors

January 30th, 2010 by lindasly

Source: Seeking Alpha (blog) (Original Article)

In one of my first articles, "Battery Technology: A Different Set of Rules," a commenter suggested that I was a bit of a Captain Buzzkill. Eighteen months later it’s clear that a lot of readers share that uncharitable view. This morning I had an e-mail exchange with a reader that raised the same basic issues and reminded me that it’s been a while since I’ve discussed the fundamental differences between energy storage and other technology related sectors. Since the subject matter can be very important to investors who want to make sound decisions, I’ve decided to edit the e-mail exchange and publish it as an article.

Inquiry: I’ve read your posts and thank you for your insights into the topics you cover. I have to ask this however … is there not "anything positive" you can say with regards to lithium-ion battery companies? I mean, can’t you give credit for anything? It seems to me that in a necessary longer term evolution of technologies they and others DO play a critical role in getting from proverbial A to B for all of us.

Response: I believe several lithium-ion battery developers have the potential to become fine companies and that the world desperately needs all of the lithium-ion, lithium air, sodium sulfur, zinc bromine, lead acid, lead carbon, sodium metal halide and nickel metal hydride batteries we can make. The products are critical to an energy efficient future and so are the companies that make them. The needs are immense beyond imagining but companies that want to survive and thrive in the energy storage sector need to be willing and able to say:

Any other approach is certain to set up unreasonable expectations in the collective consciousness of the market and over the years I’ve seen too many examples of disastrous market reactions to unsatisfied expectations. Given my long and sometimes painful experience advising small companies, I have a hard time remaining sanguine cheap flights Melbourne (Tullamarine) to Mount Isa when companies start the game by setting …continue reading

Aerial bombardment The calibration of destruction

Aerial bombardment

Jan 28th 2010 | From The Economist print edition

THE Perseus, a 900kg (2,000lb) bomb made in Greece, incinerates almost everything in an area larger than a dozen football fields. Farther out, oxygen is sucked from the air and people may be crushed by a pressure wave. The inferno is similar to that caused by napalm—a jellied-petrol explosive heavily restricted by a United Nations weapons convention.

Modified with new technologies, however, the Perseus is increasingly considered legitimate. Mark Hiznay, a bombs-control expert at Human Rights Watch, a humanitarian group based in New York, has gone so far as to say it has become a necessary weapon. With a stronger steel casing and backup shock-resistant triggering mechanisms, the Perseus can smash through several metres of reinforced concrete and detonate only after it has gone into a bunker. This makes the bomb a good way to destroy and sterilise germ- and chemical-warfare laboratories while limiting damage nearby, says Mr Hiznay.

A new generation of advanced ordnance, including the Perseus, is making bombing campaigns safer for civilians. During the first Gulf war, in 1991, American warplanes had to drop an average of six 450kg satellite-guided bombs to destroy a tank or a small building. During the second war, 12 years later, a similar attack required bombs half that size, and fewer of them. Today 100kg bombs would suffice, because guidance systems are so good that individual rooms, as opposed to entire buildings, can be aimed at.

Much of this revolution, as Mr Hiznay terms it, is due to guidance kits that can be attached to existing “dumb” bombs. An upgraded bomb, when falling, uses data from the global-positioning system in combination with laser and infra-red sensors to adjust a set of fins that work like aeroplane flaps. This steers the bomb towards its target—even if that target is moving. The cheap flight Townsville to Canberra AASM, a French navy and air-force guidance …continue reading
